Sector coupling – Creating a network of energy sectors through hydrogen
Sector coupling can enable to de-carbonise the economy and society in an economically sensible and affordable way. Energy utilisation and storage beyond the boundaries of energy sectors guarantee highest efficiency regarding the use of energy.
Hydrogen is a key element in coupling the sectors. In future, it will connect the infrastructures of electricity generation, heat supply, mobility and industrial production with each other, which have been mostly separated until now. The pre-requisite for this is a viable hydrogen infrastructure.
The advantage: the regenerative electrification of entire sectors such as heavy goods, shipping and air transport or even the steel industry will become possible. The de-carbonisation of the transport sector is also imminent through the direct conversion of hydrogen into electricity in fuel cells.
